NSE Chief says not in race for Tata Sons’ chairman’s post

Terms media reports “entirely baseless” and factually incorrect; committed to achieving NSE’s market debut

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Sunday denied a media report that stated its Managing Director and CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan is in the race to take over as Chairman of Tata Sons, describing it as “entirely baseless, speculative and factually incorrect”.

The clarification followed a recent media report that said Chauhan was a potential “dark horse” candidate to succeed N Chandrasekaran, whose tenure as head of the holding company of the Tata Group concludes in February 2027.

In an official clarification issued by the exchange, as reported by media, NSE said that the market rumours were not based on any information available with the organisation and confirmed that Chauhan had categorically denied the claims.

“The media reports linking me to the Tata Sons chairman position are entirely baseless, speculative and factually incorrect. I am fully committed to working closely with the Board and its shareholders to achieve the successful listing of the company and other associated objectives. I remain completely engaged in driving the ongoing IPO and listing process of the Exchange,” Chauhan said in a direct communication addressed to the exchange board.

The leadership speculation comes at a critical juncture for both organisations. The NSE is currently making final preparations for its long-awaited initial public offering (IPO), which is structured as an offer for sale (OFS) by existing institutional shareholders.

Meanwhile, Tata Sons is evaluating succession options after Chandrasekaran announced in August that he would not seek reappointment when his second five-year term ends in early 2027. Now, Chauhan’s formal statement confirms he will remain at the helm of the exchange as it readies for a market debut.
