Tata trust starts process to find successor to Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran
Sir Dorabji Tata Trust has initiated a selection committee to suggest a new chairman
The trustees of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) have passed a resolution to set up a selection committee “as soon as possible” to find a replacement for Tata Sons’ Chairman N Chandrasekaran.
The decision comes a day after Chandra, as he is fondly known in the industry, stepped down as chairman of Tata Sons.
The hunt for the new chairman will be in accordance with the Articles of Association (AoA) of Tata Sons, SDTT, which holds a 28 per cent stake in Tata Sons, said.
“The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust respects Chandrasekaran’s decision not to offer himself for re-appointment. We place on record our deepest appreciation for his contribution and stewardship of Tata Sons and the Tata group over the past decade. We thank him for his immense contribution during a period of significant change, growth and transformation across the group,” it said in a statement issued on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
The trusts have time till February 2027 to find a replacement.
Tata Trusts collectively holds 66% of stake in Tata Sons, making it the majority and controlling shareholder of the Tata Group’s principal holding company. Together SDTT (27.98 per cent) and Sir Ratan Tata Trust (23.56 per cent) hold 51.54 per centstake inTata Sons, and rest is held by allied trusts such as MK Tata Trust, Sarvajanik Seva Trust and others.
The Shapoorji Pallonji Group holds a little over 18.4 per cent, while Tata Group operating companies and Tata family members and others hold the rest.
“Chandrasekaran’s sudden resignation comes amid rising tensions with board representatives of Tata Trusts – senior leadership has clashed over multiple issues including board representation, group strategy, a potential public listing of Tata Sons and the proposed exit of minority shareholder Shapoorji Pallonji Group,” CreditSights, a Fitch Group company, said in a report on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
The chairman’s exit raises uncertainty over leadership continuity and strategy, though we expect a swift successor appointment (possibly by next-generation family members, limiting transition risks,” it said, adding various media reports suggest Tata scion Neville Tata is rumoured to take over the role.
Selection Process
According to Tata Sons’ Articles of Association, the chairman will be appointed by a five-member selection committee, of which three persons are nominated jointly by Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust. Two people would be nominated by Tata Sons board, one probably a board member, and another an independent person Sons. The chairman of this committee will be selected by SRTT and SDTT from its three members from the panel.
