UAE intercepts missiles, reports drone strike on oil facility

The United Arab Emirates said Monday that its air defenses intercepted three of four missiles fired from Iran, while a fourth fell into the sea, according to the UAE Ministry of Defense.

Officials in the eastern emirate of Fujairah also said an Iranian drone hit an oil facility and sparked a fire. Fujairah is home to a major pipeline terminal the UAE has used to route some oil shipments away from the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran war.

Authorities said three Indian residents were injured in the strike.

A cargo ship also caught fire off the UAE coast Monday. The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said the blaze broke out in the vessel’s engine room, and the crew was accounted for.

The UAE issued fresh mobile phone alerts warning residents of missile threats and urged them to “immediately seek a safe place in the closest secure building.”

In a post on X, the defense ministry said: “The sounds heard in scattered areas of the country are the result of the successful interception of the aerial threats.”

Iran has launched more than 2,800 drones and missiles at the UAE since the war began Feb. 28 and the April 8 ceasefire, making it the most heavily targeted Gulf country in Tehran’s campaign.
