Sun TV Network Enters Micro-Drama Market with Sun NXT Shorts

New short-form entertainment platform brings 150+ titles and originals to mobile and television, reimagining blockbuster films and popular serials for bite-sized viewing

Sun TV Network has entered the rapidly expanding micro-entertainment segment with the launch of Sun NXT Shorts, a dedicated short-form drama experience integrated into its existing Sun NXT streaming platform.

Positioned as South India’s first television viewing experience specifically designed for micro-dramas, the new offering seeks to bring short-format storytelling beyond mobile screens and onto television. The platform will initially cater to audiences across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala, combining regional storytelling with the increasingly popular consumption of quick, episodic content.

Sun NXT Shorts launches with more than 150 titles and originals, including international dubbed shorts, blockbuster movies and popular Sun TV serials that have been remastered, resized and re-edited into fast-paced episodes across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

Popular serials including Anna Thangi, Janani and Kanyadana are being reimagined for the short-form format, allowing existing stories to reach audiences accustomed to consuming entertainment in shorter bursts.

The platform also introduces different visual treatments depending on the viewing device. On smartphones, stories use tighter framing and close-ups, while television viewing uses a broader 4:3 format to retain more of the surrounding visual context.

“South India’s media market is at an inflection point. Audiences aren’t just consuming more content — they’re consuming it differently, across more screens, in shorter bursts, with far less patience for friction,” said Kaviya Maran, Executive Director, Sun TV Network.

She said the company was leveraging its extensive content library and decades of regional storytelling experience to adapt its catalogue for changing consumption habits. “We have 65,000 hours of content, decades of storytelling equity, and a distribution network that no new entrant can build overnight,” Maran said.

The company is also targeting younger viewers, particularly Gen Z audiences, through fresh originals created specifically for the micro-drama format, while simultaneously seeking to reconnect existing Sun NXT family audiences with familiar content.

Rakesh CK, Head, Sun NXT, said viewers increasingly want narrative depth without lengthy introductions. “Sun NXT Shorts removes that friction — punchy, high-stakes episodes that fit into the cracks of daily life,” he said.

He added that the strategy combines the company’s established catalogue with originals designed specifically for short-form consumption, allowing the same storytelling ecosystem to serve different generations and screens.

Sun NXT currently offers more than 65,000 hours of content, 4,300-plus movies and 44-plus live television channels across eight languages. With Sun NXT Shorts, the network is now seeking to extend that regional content advantage into a format increasingly shaped by mobile-first audiences.

The launch signals Sun TV Network’s broader attempt to combine its traditional television storytelling strength with emerging digital consumption patterns, potentially positioning regional-language content at the centre of India’s growing micro-drama market.
