In the AI Race, Google Sees India as the World’s Testing Ground

At I/O Connect India 2026, Bengaluru was presented not simply as the backdrop for the AI revolution, but as one of the places where that revolution will be tested — and possibly shaped.

For decades, Bengaluru’s claim to global importance rested on its ability to write software for the world.

Now, as artificial intelligence reshapes the technology landscape, the city is being asked to play a bigger role — not just as a developer hub, but as a laboratory for the future of intelligent machines. At Google I/O Connect India 2026, the company presented India as more than a fast-growing technology market.

It portrayed the country as a place where AI systems can be built, tested and adapted for some of the world’s most complex conditions — millions of users, hundreds of languages and problems that range from rural healthcare to crowded urban infrastructure. “If you can solve for India, you can solve for the world,” Google India Vice President and Country Manager Preeti Lobana said, capturing the central idea behind the company’s India strategy.

Broader shift in AI race

The statement reflected a broader shift in the global AI race. The competition is no longer only about developing the most powerful models in research centres. It is increasingly about deploying those models in the real world — where technology must work across different languages, economic realities and social environments.

India, with its enormous scale and diversity, has become one of the most demanding proving grounds. Google highlighted the growing use of its AI platforms, including Gemini and Gemma, in India.

The company showcased applications ranging from improving customer service for non-English-speaking users to supporting healthcare workers in rural areas through AI-enabled medical tools. One example presented at the event was Redbus, which is using Gemini to improve interactions with customers who do not primarily communicate in English.

Another was AISteth, a startup using MedGemma technology to develop a smart stethoscope aimed at assisting frontline health workers with screenings. Such examples reflect Google’s larger argument: the next stage of AI will be defined not only by technological breakthroughs but by the ecosystems that allow those breakthroughs to reach ordinary users.

“Scaling impact requires more than just breakthrough technology,” Lobana said, emphasising the need for collaboration among companies, startups, researchers, universities and public institutions. For Bengaluru, the moment represents both an opportunity and a challenge.

The city has spent three decades building its reputation as India’s technology capital, powered by software exports, engineering talent and a thriving startup culture. That foundation now places it at the centre of India’s AI ambitions.

But Bengaluru’s appeal also comes from its problems. A city transformed by rapid growth, it faces challenges in mobility, public services, urban planning and sustainability. Those pressures create a testing environment for AI applications that could eventually be relevant to cities around the world.

The vision being presented is that technologies developed in Bengaluru could help solve problems far beyond the city — from improving healthcare access in remote communities to making public systems more efficient.

Google’s growing presence in India adds weight to that ambition. The company’s operations, workforce and developer ecosystem have made Bengaluru one of its most important global locations.

The larger question, however, extends beyond one company or one city: who will define the next era of artificial intelligence? Silicon Valley has traditionally dominated technology innovation, but the future of AI may depend on places that can adapt the technology to billions of different lives.

India’s advantage may lie precisely in its complexity. A country that requires technology to work across languages, income groups and geographic divides may produce solutions with global relevance.
