Ambani family tops India’s most valuable private businesses list at ₹25.8 lakh crore
The rapid ascent of families such as Adani, Jindal, and Agarwal signals a dynamic reshaping of India’s corporate landscape.
Ambani family, headed by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has retained its position as India’s most valuable family business, with a valuation of ₹25.8 lakh crore. Despite an 8.5% decline in value over the past year, the Ambani family – which controls Reliance Industries (RIL) – remains far ahead of its peers, valued more than three times the second-ranked Kumar Mangalam Birla family.
Collectively, India’s top 300 families are worth ₹138 lakh crore ($1.46 trillion), equivalent to the world’s 18th-largest economy, according to 2026 Barclays Private Clients Hurun India Most Valuable Family Businesses List.
“The list has grown 27.5 per cent since 2024, even as the Nifty 50 fell 1.1 per cent and the Sensex declined 3.7 per cent. These are not passive fortunes; they are working engines of the economy,” Anas Rahman Junaid, Founder of Hurun India, said.

The Kumar Mangalam Birla family moved to second place with a valuation of ₹8.13 lakh crore, up 26 per cent year-on-year and 51 per cent over three years. The Jindal family, led by Sajjan Jindal of JSW Steel, followed closely in third at ₹8.01 lakh crore, marking a 40 per cent annual rise and 70 per cent growth over three years.
The Bajaj family ranked fourth at ₹7.70 lakh crore, down 3.9 per cent, while the Mahindra family held fifth place with ₹5.14 lakh crore, despite a 5.4 per cent decline. The Anil Agarwal family, boosted by Vedanta’s demerger into five listed entities, surged 75 per cent to ₹4.45 lakh crore, securing sixth place.
The Murugappa family came seventh with ₹3.06 lakh crore, while the Nadar family (HCL Technologies) dropped to eighth after a steep 38 per cent decline to ₹2.91 lakh crore. The Premji family (Wipro) ranked ninth at ₹2.72 lakh crore, down 2.3 per cent.
“As wealth grows, so does the need for sophisticated advice and long-term planning,” Adrish Ghosh, Head of Barclays Private Bank India, said on the findings, underscoring the importance of succession planning, governance, and family office structures.

The Jindal family created the most value in absolute terms over three years, adding ₹3.3 lakh crore to reach ₹8.02 lakh crore.
