Amazon India to deploy a fleet of 1,000 customed EV trucks

Amazon India plans to deploy a fleet of 1,000 custom-designed electric trucks by 2028 for its delivery service, Amazon Now, in collaboration with VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV).

The fleet would comprise of Eicher trucks and buses, a business division of VECV (a joint venture between Sweden’s Volvo Group and India’s Eicher Motors), it said in a statement.

This follows Amazon’s recent announcement to scale up Amazon Now, an ultra-fast delivery service, to 100 cities across India, which will be supported by a network of more than 1,000 micro-fulfilment centres.

“We have always focused on making our operations more sustainable and have steadily expanded our electric mobility efforts, with over 12,000 EVs already deployed across India. We work closely with multiple OEM partners to build solutions suited to our needs and are integrating electric transportation more deeply as we grow. The planned deployment of about 1,000 purpose-built Volvo Eicher electric trucks is yet another step in that direction,” Abhinav Singh, VP Operations at Amazon India and Australia, said.

The newly introduced fleet will consist of custom-designed Eicher Pro-X small trucks, compact electric vehicles. Amazon India has already operationalised 50 of these trucks and plans to fully scale the fleet to more than 1,000 units by 2028.

The fleet deployment will initially target key metropolitan areas, starting with Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, and Mumbai.

The expansion of Amazon Now to 100 cities will bring the ultra-fast delivery service to various secondary and tertiary urban markets, including Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kochi, Mangalore, and Vizag.

This partnership-led approach ensures that we are not only delivering electric vehicles, but also enabling efficient, reliable, and scalable logistics solutions,” SS Gill, Chief Commercial Officer at VECV, said.

Sustainability Roadmap

To date, Amazon has deployed more than 12,500 electric vehicles across more than 500 Indian cities, partnering with various manufacturers to transition both its last-mile and middle-mile logistics infrastructure away from traditional fossil fuels.

The vehicle roll-out aligns with Amazon’s wider corporate objective under The Climate Pledge—which the company co-founded—to reach net-zero carbon operations globally by 2040.

Beyond transport, Amazon’s clean energy portfolio in India includes 53 wind and solar projects capable of generating more than 1.1 gigawatts (GW) of carbon-free energy. The e-commerce firm also stated it is working to return more water to Indian communities than it consumes by 2027, through sanitation and clean water investments that it claims have benefited more than 1 million people since 2020. Furthermore, the company noted that more than half of the customer orders processed through its Indian fulfilment network are now shipped with reduced or no added delivery packaging.
