China Upgrades BeiDou Navigation System, Enhances Global Positioning Performance

BeiDou Navigation Satellite System currently operates 50 satellites in orbit, providing global positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) services to users worldwide

China has completed an in-orbit upgrade of its BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), enhancing the quality and reliability of services provided by the country’s indigenous global satellite navigation network.

The China Satellite Navigation Office announced that the upgrade has been successfully completed, further strengthening BeiDou’s capabilities as one of the world’s leading satellite navigation systems.

According to the office, the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System currently operates 50 satellites in orbit, providing global positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) services to users worldwide. The system delivers positioning accuracy better than 10 metres, velocity measurement accuracy better than 0.2 metres per second, and timing accuracy within 20 nanoseconds.

Officials described BeiDou as a mature, fully operational and high-performance global satellite navigation system, supporting applications across transportation, agriculture, telecommunications, emergency response, surveying, autonomous systems and national infrastructure.

The completion of the in-orbit upgrade is expected to improve overall service quality, system stability and operational efficiency, although the China Satellite Navigation Office did not disclose specific technical details of the enhancements.

BeiDou is China’s answer to the United States’ Global Positioning System (GPS), Europe’s Galileo, Russia’s GLONASS, and India’s NavIC. Since achieving global coverage in 2020, the constellation has become a critical component of China’s space infrastructure, supporting both civilian and strategic applications while expanding its international footprint through partnerships under the Belt and Road Initiative.

The latest upgrade underscores China’s continued investment in satellite navigation technologies as it seeks to improve positioning precision, resilience and service capabilities for an expanding range of commercial, scientific and public-sector users worldwide.
