India’s IEX April power trade rises 16.6% as real-time market jumps

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) said that its electricity trade volume rose 16.6% year-on-year in April, as strong demand and higher activity in the real-time market boosted trading.
The exchange traded 12,341 million units of electricity in April. Real-time market volumes climbed 30.2% from a year earlier to 5,069 million units, while day-ahead market volumes rose 8.7% to 4,624 million units, IEX said in a statement.
The green market also posted gains, with volumes rising 7.5% year-on-year, though renewable energy certificate trading fell 59.4% from a year earlier, the company said.
India’s electricity demand hit an all-time high of 256 gigawatts in April amid hot weather, while energy consumption rose 4% year-on-year to 154 billion units, according to the exchange’s data.
Average market-clearing prices stood at Rs 5.26 per unit, up 1% from a year earlier, with prices in the real-time market touching near-zero levels at several time blocks because of surplus renewable power during solar hours, Rediff Money reported, citing PTI.
