Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw Backs Niece Claire Mazumdar for Top Role

In an industry where leadership changes are often sudden, silent, or shrouded in ambiguity, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is taking a far more deliberate route at Biocon. The biotech pioneer has set out a clear succession plan, naming her niece, Claire Mazumdar, as the future leader of the company she built over four decades.
For Mazumdar-Shaw, 73, the decision is both personal and strategic. With no direct heir and a company that has grown into a major biopharmaceutical player, she says her priority is ensuring Biocon remains in capable hands as the next era of biotechnology and artificial intelligence begins to reshape the industry. “I am the sole owner of Biocon, and I need to make sure that I put it in good hands,” she told Fortune India.
The transition, however, will be gradual rather than immediate. Mazumdar-Shaw will remain in her current role while Claire takes on greater responsibilities over time, allowing for continuity as the company prepares for its next chapter.
Claire Mazumdar, 37, brings a strong operating pedigree of her own. As founder and chief executive of Bicara Therapeutics, she guided the company from launch to its NASDAQ listing in 2024. The debut valued the company at more than $800 million, and its market capitalisation has since climbed beyond $1.6 billion. Bicara’s lead programme is a bifunctional antibody targeting head and neck cancers, with clinical trials still underway globally.
Her career spans venture capital and drug development. She previously worked at Third Rock Ventures, where she focused on company formation and strategy, and at Rheos Medicines, where she helped steer business development, including a key partnership with Roche.
