Fermi Explorer Mission Plans $15 Million Probe to Alpha Centauri
Nonprofit aims to launch a small spacecraft by 2029, beginning humanity’s first dedicated journey toward another star
The newly announced Fermi Explorer Mission is planning an ambitious but deliberately low-cost attempt to send a small spacecraft toward Alpha Centauri, the nearest star system to the Sun, with a launch targeted before the end of 2029.
The nonprofit mission aims to make humanity’s first dedicated journey toward another star using largely existing, flight-proven space technology rather than developing an entirely new propulsion system. The proposed spacecraft would carry at least 1 kg of payload and is expected to cost less than $15 million to design, build, launch and operate.
However, the mission is not designed to reach Alpha Centauri within a human lifetime. The current trajectory calls for the spacecraft to take roughly 77,500–80,000 years to reach the Alpha Centauri system. The mission team says the objective is to get at least 99% of the way to the system rather than attempting to orbit or land on a planet.
The spacecraft is expected to weigh approximately 100–200 kg and use solar-electric propulsion. The mission’s trajectory planning includes a proposed “perihelion pump” manoeuvre, intended to help the spacecraft build sufficient velocity under the project’s stringent mass and cost constraints.
A Mission Designed for Future Generations
The Fermi Explorer Mission is being led by Philip Johnston, Adi Oltean and Ezra Feilden, with Garrett Jameson serving as programme manager. The organisation says its broader purpose extends beyond the spacecraft itself: it wants to make interstellar exploration tangible and encourage future generations to consider humanity’s place in the universe.
The mission takes its name from physicist Enrico Fermi and the Fermi Paradox, which asks why, despite the apparent possibility of extraterrestrial civilisations, humanity has yet to find conclusive evidence of them. The team hopes the project will stimulate discussion around humanity’s long-term future and the possibility of becoming a multiplanetary and eventually interstellar civilisation.
The spacecraft could also carry scientific, artistic and cultural contributions, including messages intended for people in the distant future. The organisation has said it plans to include a copy of the Voyager Golden Record or similar material.
First to Leave, Last to Arrive
At around 4.4 light-years, Alpha Centauri is relatively close in astronomical terms but remains extraordinarily distant for current spacecraft technology.
The Fermi Explorer team describes its strategy as being “the first to leave and the last to arrive.” Faster interstellar spacecraft developed by future generations could potentially overtake the probe and reach Alpha Centauri thousands of years before it does.
That is not considered a failure by the mission team. Instead, the extremely long journey is part of the project’s philosophical objective: to launch something today whose destination lies far beyond the lifetime of any person involved in its creation.
The mission remains contingent on securing funding, selecting a spacecraft manufacturer and completing the technical and operational planning. If those conditions are met, the organisation aims to launch the probe before the end of 2029.
